Takao Koyama the main writer for all thirteen previous theatrical Dragon Ball Z films as well as the “series organizer” for the Dragon Ball Z TV series had something funny to say about BoG. After seeing the film, Koyama penned a post on his blog, Noppo no Zakkan (“Noppo’s Various Impressions”). In it, he details his thoughts on the villain of the movie (Beerus, God of Destruction) and its “issue at hand”: "After much hard work, I was unable to come up with an opponent stronger than Broli, and fell into a rut where I made him appear three times. That is to say, there’s the matter of questioning the idea of Broli as the strongest. As you are well aware, vehement opinions on the subject have been flying back and forth on this message board, as well as a variety of [other] websites. For this time, Goku’s opponent, designed by Toriyama-sensei, was even a God of Destruction. In the world of Dragon Ball Z, that’s a setting where even Broli, before the God of Destruction, would face a gap like that between a Yokozuna and the very bottom of the sumo ranks. That Broli, reduced to a pushover. Only, from the impression I got of the character on the screen, Broli was scarier, no contest. Am I the only one who found that Broli looked overwhelmingly frightening? Or am I just biased towards my own creation?" http://www.kanzenshuu.com/2013/07/07/takao-koyamas-thoughts-on-battle-of-gods/ |

This is actually something that's well known throughout the DBZ community. Almost everyone knows that Koyama is pretty much biased to his own creation. When you read something like this, it sounds like some kid who needs to be the center of attention at someone' birthday party. Let's just ignore whatever Broly is as a character and how you feel about him. I doubt, or hope this isn't the intention, but its almost like Kanye West. Takao: Yo Toriyama! Beerus is a good villain and Imma let you finish, but Broly is the greatest villain in the world. Edited by EMIYA, Jul 4 2015, 08:20 PM.

I agree with him. Much as I loathe Broly, he was twice as entertaining as Beers was. The post is somewhat childish though |

At least he didn't say it all arrogant like. It wouldn't make him look good if he said something like, "I don't care how strong Toriyama makes his characters, they suck compared to Broly!" The way he said it just shows he's proud of his work and nothing more, which is understandable. |

Koyama is missing the point. The gods in this franchise are supposed to be unimposing, at least based on what we've seen so far. What's more, an atmosphere of dread was not what Toriyama was going for. |

Being unimposing doesn't mean that you have to be a joke. Kaioshin had more dignity than them |

I liked Beerus more because he wasn't a total brute. If Koyama gave Broly any kind of character or motivation beyond being crazy and wanting to kill Goku because he heard him crying when they were both babies (and somehow knew exactly what Goku looked like), he might be a little more compelling. At the very least, Beerus is presented as a force of nature, a being that exists to bring balance to the Universe by destroying. Edited by Yu Narukami, Jul 4 2015, 10:48 PM.

In your opinion, which I couldn't possibly disagree more with. They create a pleasant atmosphere and actually have characters, which is more than I can say for any movie antagonist prior. Beerus is certainly a silly fella, but he's a lot more complex than you're making him out to be. Besides, the idea of a God of Destruction is fascinating, and it adds to the lore of the show, unlike the whole Legendary Super Saiyan nonsense. Broli's mere existence trivializes Goku's ascension to Super Saiyan because apparently you have to be born a Super Saiyan to be classified as the "Legendary Super Saiyan". Beerus is unoriginal garbage who's an embarrassment to the DB franchise. And Broly is more complex than what people know. Hell Hirdugan's story was more complex. Beerus is just a majin Boo rip off. Wish the stupid cat never existed. I'm disgusted every time I see him. |

Beerus - Someone with big power who been asleep for many years. Goofy personality and a crybaby. A bit of an attitude. Doesn't look scary but actually is. Stronger than SSJ form that debut. Names begin with B. Ruthless. Loves to fight and be challenged. Kais feared him. Job is to destroy Boo - Someone with big power who been asleep for many years. Goofy personality and a crybaby. A bit of an attitude. Doesn't look scary but actually is. Stronger than a new SSJ form that debut. Names begin with B. Ruthless. Loves to fight and be challenged. Kais feared him. Live to destroy. I'm sorry what? I'm not going to get into debate on who you people like more, that's truly an objective point. Heck despite thinking Beerus is a more complex and interesting character I probably enjoy Cooler more. But are you people telling me that Broly is a better constructed character than Beerus? People, friends...that isn't true and you know it. You might not like Beerus, in the same way you may not like Casablanca. But you can't come up to me that Plan 9 From Outer Space is the better movie. You may not like Casablanca and you might be more entertained by B-movie by one of history's most notorious bad directors. But you know damn well that Casalanca is a far better created movie with actual consistency, plot, characters and not bulls***ting the camera as Ed Wood was known for. Or so I assume as I have not seen either of them. But you get my point. Beerus is someone who was given characterization beyond a lot of the things we saw even in the original series as a villain and far more than any villain in the movies. You can like Broly more, but I will call all of you people on your absolute golden nugget eating BS if you tell me Broly was a better crafted character than Beerus. --- --- Now on to the subject of this Beerus is a Boo rip off? In kindest terms right now, what the heck are you people talking about? Majin Boo was a violent sociopath with little to no morality to him. He got stronger by absorbing people and through different points in time because more or less evil through different means. Super Boo and beyond were your typical evil bastards not unlike Freeza or Cell. Fat Boo, arguably are most original villain was someone who fit more along the lines of that anti-villain status. Someone who wasn't evil by nature but by the workings of the environment. It was the literal case of nature vs nurture. And then you had ape s*** just flush it down the toilet Kid Boo. May I ask, my dear friends, how this relates to a purple Egyptian, non absorbing cat who treats destruction as the natural part of the universe? Because of Beerus is a rip off of Boo, then you guys must be lose your poop, whenever you see Janemba. In fact, Boo, who was if anything his own original character, has become more a Beerus rip off in new information. Considering Toriyama's turned him into this (Being who destroys worlds constantly through a natural time of sleep and awakening) Kind of like a God of Destruction...like Beerus. I didn't say Broly was more complex. I said he's more complex than what people know. I didn't even imply it. So why are you ranting?
Um Toriyama said Boo been around since beginning of time. Before even Beerus. So clearly Beerus just took Boo's old job except now it has a title. Edited by TheGmGoken, Jul 4 2015, 11:49 PM.

How? This is Broly's story. Broly was a baby, he heard another baby crying and decided to lose his absolute ungodly s*** over it and become a deranged evil villain. This is literally the equivalent of if I was a baby and I heard some baby of color crying and grew up being a racist because of it. I mean you can present me some information on Broly being a far more complex character but right now the bar is set quite low. |

What a shallow comparison. Beerus hasn't been asleep, he sleeps in intervals. What's more, he isn't confined in a prison made by a wizard. Goku has a goofy personality too, would you compare him to Boo? I wouldn't. Also, crybaby? That's an exaggeration. Beerus is spoiled and impatient, certainly, but I certainly wouldn't classify him as a crybaby, unlike Boo. Yeah, Beerus has an attitude, but Boo's attitude is derivative of his stubbornness, while Beerus's is derivative of his superiority complex. Stronger than SSJ at his debut? What the f*** kind of comparison is that? That's been the case since the Artificial Humans... Seriously? What do the first letters of their names have to do with their characters? Uh, most people in this franchise love to fight, welcome to Dragon Ball. If you're going to criticize a character for being too similar to another, you may want to avoid comparing traits most other characters have. As for the Kaioshin fearing him, uh, they'd fear anyone stronger than them. Boo likes destroying, it's not his job, there is a difference. |
